HR Zone: Diversity and Inclusion by James Adeleke

Generation Success Founder and President James Adeleke has made a contribution to HR zone to demonstrate why Diversity and Inclusion is the future of Business and why it is time to champion greater social mobility for young talent. He elaborates on why class and social status shouldn’t be a barrier to entry into a career in today’s society.
With more than 5 years experience in working to champion Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace through Generation Success, James applies his personal experience and notes that “Companies need to throw out the rulebook when it comes to employing young people and put in place new ways and means that give prospective employees more opportunity to shine.”

Macfarlanes LLP host Black History Month Special in collaboration with Generation Success

As part of their programe to drive more diversity within the legal profession, Macfarlanes LLP held a Black History Month Special on the 24thof October.

Macfarlanes provided 15 mentors who spoke about the job opportunites at the firm and how they can be accessed.

For this event, Macfarlanes collaborated with Generation Success, a social enterprise that works to advance social mobility and tackle the non educational barriers into the elite proffessions.

Generation Success works with organisations to change their diverse talent recruitment & retention practices.

This event was the 4thBlack History Month Special Generation Success has held.

Through their Black History Month Specials, Generation Success wants to raise the aspirations of BAME youth and to break the educational myth by:

  • Highlighting BAME industry leaders to break the glass ceiling
  • Informing audiences of what professional job opportunities are available and how they can enter them
  • Increasing attendees social capital

The night’s event consisted of:

  • Speed Mentoring (Think ‘Speed Dating’, but for your career)
  • Featured Speakers (BAME industry leaders)
  • Q&A session with the featured speakers
  • Networking session

At the event there were 30 mentors from Macfarlanes and Alix Partnersand 6 featured speakers.

The featured speakers were:

  • Lorraine Wright, Director at UBS
  • Rose St Louis, Head of Strategic Partnership at Zurich Insurance Ltd
  • Elton Ndoma-Ogarr, Head of Diversity and inclusion at Alix Partners
  • Jennifer Thomas, Director of Internal Communications & Experience at Direct Line Group
  • Jat Bains, Partner at Macfarlanes
  • Sophia Aluko, Head of Service Management at Barclays

This event attracted over a hundred attendees who were a mixture of students and professionals.

Generation Success’ past Black History Month Events have attracted 600 people in total.

TD Securities’ to run their UK first undergraduate internship

TD Securities’ will be holding their first UK undergraduate internship programme this summer 2020 for first and second year undergraduate students.

TD Securities’ is a Canadian investment bank and financial services provider andoffers a full range of financial products and services to over 25 million customers worldwide.

Their summer internship is a 10 week long paid role in one of the following areas; Sales, Technology, Legal Compliance or Operations.

Interns will be given responsibility to develop a core skill set and will be able to gain a wide experience of TD Securities’ front office, support and control functions providing them a foundation to a career at TD Securities.

To bring this opportunity to undergraduate students, TD Securities has partnered up with Generation Success.

Generation Success is a social enterprise who works to advance social mobility and tackle the non educational barriers into the elite proffessions.

Withrich experience in working with organisations and young people to help connect talent with employers, Generation Success works to remove barriers to create equal access and opportunities.

Generation Success has plans to grow to a national level, next year they will be expanding to Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds. They are looking to engage employers that are keen to do engage with a diverse talent pool.

Generation Success has been selected to be part of EY Foundation’s Accelerator Program

Generation Success has been selected by the EY Foundation to be part of their 12-Month Accelerate program.

‘Accelerate’ teaches the chosen social enterprises how to scale up their business and increase their impact through business coaching, workshops, networking and project support.

This success follows on from Generation Success being named one of the top 100 social enterprises in the SE100 index earlier this year.

Generation Success has been shortlisted for the South London Business Awards that is to take place on the 31stof October.

The South London Business Awards is a programme that was developed to celebrate South London’s outstanding and innovative businesses.

Generation Success works to remove barriers to connect businesses and people of diversity, creating equal access and opportunities.

This year Generation Success has enjoyed many success including being selected for EY’s Accelerate program and winning a contract with TD securities to run their graduate scheme.

Generation Success’ contract with TD Securities is their biggest yet. In order to help TD securities recruit from a diverse talent pool, Generation Success has been chosen to manage the recruitment of their graduate scheme.

Sophia Aluko to speak at Macfarlanes for their Black History Month Special

On the 24thof October, Sophia Aluko will be one of six featured speakers at Generation Success’ Black History Month Special hosted by MacFarlanes.

Sophia Aluko is the Head of Service Management for the Transitions Management Office at Barclays based in London.

She is responsible for overseeing the services Barclays provides to divested businesses in Africa and Europe.

Since joining Barclays in 2008 Sophia has held various senior roles in Finance, COO and Businesses in the UK and South Africa.

At the Black History Month Special, Sophia will be speaking about her career journey; how she entered her field, her career defining moments and what challenges she has faced.

When asked why she wanted to take part in this event she said “The mission of Generation Success resonates with me and is in line with my passion.”

By highlighting Sophia and her fellow speakers the event, who are all BAME industry leaders, Generation Success wants to break the glass ceiling to raise the aspirations of BAME youth.

AS part of their GS Power Series to provide students and proffesinals more opportunites, Generation Success will be holding a Law Special with Dentons UK and Middle East LLP on the 12thof November.

This Law Special is part of Generation Success’ monthly event series called “GS Power Series”, where they partner up with different corporate companies to bring industry focused events to students and proffesionals.

The purpose of these events are to inspire and support individuals in building essential knowledge, skills and confidence required to accelerate their career by:

  • Offering valuable mentoring and networking opportunities with industry professionals
  • Sharing real-life experiences and career journeys and learn as an industry leader
  • Informing them of what professional job opportunities are available and how they can enter them

Firstly I am James Adeleke a fellow of SSE. I run a not for profit called Generation Success (welcome to our website) that has been expanding and had outgrown our current office space and could not afford to pay more.
When searching for an affordable office we came across this concept of under used day time spaces and the understanding that we are not the only ones in the situation.
